Drinking water quality is monitored by the Drinking Water Laboratory on a regular basis.
The Laboratory, which was established in 1955 and reconstructed in 2003, is certified to perform microbiological, physical and chemical examinations of drinking water. The Laboratory monitors drinking water of Vilnius City as well as Šalčininkai, Švenčionys and Vilnius Districts by performing over 20 thousand of water examinations per year. Chemical (indicatory and toxic), physical and microbiological indicators of drinking water quality are examined in accordance with the Hygiene Norm of Lithuania HN 24:2017 “Safety and quality requirements of drinking water”. At present 50 indicators are examined. 


Although groundwater is protected from the external pollution, intense human activities (industry, agriculture, transport, domestic waste) lead to a continuous pollution of the environment and may create conditions for potentially harmful substances to enter the water. Therefore, a well defined and continuous monitoring of water quality is of a vital importance. Almost all elements existing in the water are necessary for the human body. The drinking water provides the human body with 1% to 10% of the required quantity of microelements per day (Fe, Mg, Mo, Co, F, S). However, their excess in the water may cause different functional disorders and diseases. Therefore, concentrations of these substances (values) are strictly limited. 

The supplied water is safe and of a good quality, does not exceed the limits and specific indicators, meets the requirements of the Hygiene Norm of Lithuania HN 24:2017 and the EU Council Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of water intended for human consumption. In case of a danger of microbiologic pollution, UAB “Vilniaus vandenys” has the possibility to disinfect water by hypochlorite solution in its wellfields.


Drinking water shall satisfy the following requirements:

  • It shall not contain any pathogenic microorganisms, viruses and parasitic protozoa.
  • Water shall have good organoleptic characteristics (taste, odour, clarity, etc.). 
  • Water shall not contain any toxic substances and salts exceeding the limits set by regulations.
